NavyMasters Coaches

John McManus - Head & Monday/Friday's Coach

John joined NavyMasters during the 2000/01 swim season to train and compete with the team. He volunteered to assist the NavyMasters by coaching during the 2005/06 swim season so that Coach Tony could get a long course workout once a week at Crystal.  Not one to coach from the deck, John puts out the workout and then swims it.

From 2007-2012, John was the Canadian Forces Patron of Swimming and Lifesaving. As well, he currently serves on the board of Masters Swimming Association of British Columbia as the Vice-President and Webmaster.

Alex Cape - Friday's Coach

Alex is also a very experienced swimmer who also coaches with Victoria Masters and joined the NavyMasters Coaching Staff in 2014.  During the summer of 2014, she completed a 70 km marathon swim, and when asked why she does it she replied:
"I could simply say that I love swimming, that being in the water offers comfort, peace, and yet challenges like no other sport. I could explain that I can hold a steady pace for hours and hours and hours, or that I have never been much of a sprinter. I could talk about the complete bliss of sharing a workout with a variety of swim team mates who have been a part of my life for decades. But I think the biggest factor for me, the reason that I eat, sleep, and breathe swimming, is that I want to see just how far I can go. I have always been drawn to the edge, to smashing barriers, to climbing over obstacles, to pushing beyond boundaries. I want to push just a little bit farther." In 2015, she swam 94 km in Lake Cowichan.  Alex's Swim
